Brian’s photographs capture the beauty of nature in a way that makes one look anew and see familiar scenes with a new perspective. His prints have a rich, warm character reminiscent of the best platinum prints in the pre-WWI era – dark, almost velvet blacks with subtle details in the highlights. His subjects are always infused with atmosphere through his choice of clouds, water reflections, or shadows, and the way they interact with each other.

Glad I signed up for Brian’s newsletter. Not only can you count on a beautiful, thoughtfully crafted photo that captures the essence of a natural space, you also get some history into the area you’re looking at — how the place came to be, the way the environment has evolved over time, and it’s location in the larger North Carolina region.

Artistic expression flows naturally for Brian, and is a consistent theme of his work. The result is not forced or artificial, but natural and elevated. He gives you simple scenes, quiet moments, framed with new perspective. Brian encourages you take in the world we all see by slowing down, and really looking at the beauty of the landscape in a new way.

Brian's photograph has been a great addition to our home. It truly captures the vastness of the beach and the sky of the Outer Banks. He has an eye for seeing nature in a way I would not have noticed.

Several years ago, we purchased one of Brian's original large format prints for our guest bedroom. Almost every guest that stays with us comments on the overall beauty, as well as the unique perspective that Brian used to create it. His photograph is an asset to our home, and we enjoy it every day.

Having known Brian for twenty years as a colleague, friend, and fellow alumnus of the same fine arts program, I have seen firsthand the consideration, detail, and professionalism he applies to all of his projects - including his series of North Carolina landscapes.

Brian brings a fresh vision to the state's natural landscapes. Mastering the uncommon art of black-and-white landscape photography, he captures the state's inherent natural beauty in a timeless way. His deliberate use of deep shadows imbues his images with a moody atmosphere, while the contrast with the light areas adds a depth that draws the observer into a more contemplative state. Brian's ever-growing body of work not only enriches our appreciation of North Carolina's natural heritage but also offers a vision for the future, reminding us of all we need to treasure and protect.

Brian's skill at photography revealed itself early, in subtle ways. Years ago during graduate school, as he was learning to sculpt in bronze, he documented his works with a camera. The pre-cast wax figures posed on a pedestal then photographed with a macro lens, became full-sized humans in the throes of their quiet existence. These photos were more than stand-ins for the sculpture they documented. They became source material for a series of mono-prints. One of these hangs on my wall. When I see the silhouetted figures in that print, I see the same compositional strength found in Brian's landscape photographs.

I have really enjoyed receiving Brian’s newsletters and look forward to them each month. Focusing on one North Carolina park, his essays are exceptionally written and include local history. I also love his black and white landscape photographs. They offer a unique perspective of his chosen subject.
