Weymouth Woods
Located in the Sandhill Region of North Carolina, the Weymouth Woods Nature Preserve was established in 1963. Thanks to the Boyd family, who protected and donated the land, the property contains a large number of old growth longleaf pines - ranging from 250 to 450 years old. The oldest known living longleaf pine in the world exists inside the preserve and dates back to 1548.
During my recent visit, I hiked on the Pine Barrens Trail near the visitor center. The preserve is quiet, and the combination of the sand and bright sun made me feel much closer to the coast than I would have imagined. The only thing more plentiful than the ferns below the trees are the pine needles and pinecones covering the trail.
If you’d like to learn more about the region and the the town of Southern Pines, you may also want to stop by the Campbell House - home of the Arts Council of Moore County. Beautiful facility and friendly staff.
