Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain is one of the most scenic places to hike in North Carolina. Located along the Blue Ridge Parkway south of Blowing Rock, the trail along the ridge of the mountain is both challenging and stunningly beautiful.

Thankfully, there are a few different ways to the top. The first is by purchasing a ticket at the main gate, driving up to the Mile High Swinging Bridge parking area, and then continuing along the Grandfather Trail up to McRae and Calloway Peaks. The second option is hiking round trip along the western slope of the mountain on the Profile Trail (7+miles). And, the third option is hiking on the eastern side of the mountain from the Boone Fork parking area on the Blue Ridge Parkway (6+ miles).

If it’s your first time, drive up to the swinging bridge and then decide if you want to hike further up. Hiking the trails to either peak is more than just a walk in the park - with boulders to scramble over, cables to hold onto, and ladders to climb. Best to wear decent hiking shoes, bring water and a snack, and plan on being on the trail for at least 5 hours - or 6 hours if you want to sit at the top and take photographs of the clouds passing by.
